Puerto Narino: A Hidden Gem in the Colombian Amazon

Tucked away in the heart of the Colombian Amazon, Puerto Narino is a small town that offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity and culture of the Amazonas region. While it may not be as well-known as other tourist destinations in South America, Puerto Narino has plenty to offer for the daring traveler seeking an authentic Amazonian experience.

Getting to Puerto Narino is an adventure in itself. The town is accessible only by boat from the nearby city of Leticia, a journey that takes about two hours along the Amazon River. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for pink dolphins and other wildlife that call the river home.

Once you arrive in Puerto Narino, you’ll find a charming town with a laid-back atmosphere. The town is car-free, and the primary mode of transportation is by foot. The sounds of the jungle and the lush greenery are two of the things I most enjoyed.

One of the top attractions in Puerto Narino is the nearby Amacayacu National Park, which is home to a vast array of plant and animal species, including monkeys, sloths, and toucans. You can take a guided tour of the park to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region and even spend a night in a jungle lodge for a truly immersive experience.

For a more cultural experience, visit the Yagua indigenous community, located just a short boat ride from Puerto Narino. The Yagua people have lived in the Amazon for centuries and have a rich history and culture that they are happy to share with visitors. You can learn about their traditional way of life, try their food, and purchase handmade crafts as souvenirs.

Another unique experience in Puerto Narino is visiting the Tarapoto Lakes, a group of small lagoons located about 30 minutes by boat from town. We swam in the Lake and it was beautiful. The lakes are surrounded by dense jungle and are home to a variety of and plants and animals.

Overall, Puerto Narino is a hidden gem in the Colombian Amazon that is well worth a visit for anyone interested in nature, culture, and adventure. With its unique blend of biodiversity and indigenous culture, Puerto Narino offers a truly authentic Amazonian experience that you won’t find anywhere else
